The word Doula (pronounced doo-la ) comes from ancient Greek and is used to refer to someone experienced in childbirth who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after childbirth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.
and the rest is as its laid out currently…
Research evidence shows that the quality services of a postpartum Doula can ease the transition that comes with the addition of a baby to a family, improve parental satisfaction, and reduce the risk of mood disorders.
You are encouraged to contact “Nurturing Birth Experience….Before, During & After” near your 28th week of pregnancy. This will allow time to become acquainted, obtain a history of the pregnancy and learn about prior births, expectations, wishes and needs and plan how to enhance your birth experience. Your Doula will assist you in developing a realistic birthing plan, and offer information on labour and delivery, and instruction in relaxation, breathing, visualization and comfort techniques.
During the actual delivery, the Doula will remain continuously with the birthing mom as part of the health care team, offering comfort and encouragement. Following the baby’s arrival, the Doula will help with breastfeeding, infant care information, and provide follow-up support for the new parents with postpartum visits.
The Doula’s support is as valuable to the father as it is to the mother. A sympathetic ear, source of encouragement, gentle educator and a friend is something from which we could all benefit throughout our lives. The postpartum Doula provides all of these during this defining life experience.
The importance of the father’s involvement and support during the weeks following birth cannot be overstated. During this time he truly becomes a parent, getting to know this tiny, yet complete person who has entered his family. The Doula can ease this introduction, helping the father to discover all he can do about his baby, as well as as developing his own concept of himself as a parent. In addition, a Doula can help parents adjust their own relationship, moving forward to enhance their previous life together as a couple who are now parents. The role of the Doula is to help the family experience success.

Pregnancy, labour, and delivery create many changes in a woman’s body – some slowly over several months, and some acutely due to trauma during labour and delivery. All women who go through this amazing process change the way they use their muscle system to stabilize the lumbopelvic region and transfer loads through their bodies. The goal of this program is to provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to restore optimum function of your lower back and pelvis. The information delivered, as well as the exercises and movement behaviours taught, will help to restore optimal stabilization strategies for your lower back and pelvic girdle, potentially reducing the risk of future lower back and pelvic pain, as well as prevent problems such as uterine prolapse and bladder dysfunction.
Post-Caesarean / Post-hysterectomy Care & Education

Acupuncture involves the insertion of extremely thin needles through your skin at strategic points on your body. A key component of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is most commonly used to treat pain.
Traditional Chinese medicine explains acupuncture as a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force — known as qi or chi (CHEE) — believed to flow through pathways (meridians) in your body. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance.
In contrast, many Western practitioners view the acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. Some believe that this stimulation boosts your body’s natural painkillers and increases blood flow.

Electric Stimulation Therapy is a therapeutic treatment that applies electrical stimulation in treating muscle spasms and pain. It can help prevent atrophy and build strength in patients with injuries. It is also helpful in keeping muscles active especially after any type spinal cord injury or strokes. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a commonly used non-pharmacologic and non-invasive treatment of Pain, involving the use of a mild electrical current with a frequency less than 10Hz to 150 Hz that reduces the pain felt from some conditions.
Please contact us to find out more information regarding our Electrical Stimulation.
Therapeutic Ultrasound is a treatment modality commonly used in physical therapy. It is used to provide deep heating to soft tissues in the body. These include muscles, tendons, joints, and ligaments. Ultrasound uses a high frequency sound wave emitted from the sound head when electricity is passed through a quartz crystal. The sound waves cause the vibration of water molecules deep within tissue causing a heating effect. When the sound waves are pulsed, they cause a vibration of the tissue rather than heating. The stream of sound waves helps with nutrition exchange at the cellular level and healing. Studies have shown that ultrasound is helpful for ligament healing and clinically, for carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle spasms.

Chiropractic Services offer you natural health care without surgery or prescription drugs. Chiropractic is a natural form of health care that uses spinal adjustments to correct misalignments and restore function to the nervous system, helping your body to heal naturally. Chiropractic doesn’t use surgical practices, or medicinal drugs. With a chiropractic spinal adjustment, there is application of a precise force to a specific part of the spinal segment, which corrects the misalignment, assisting your body to recuperate on its own and permitting normal nerve transmission.

A major part of the successful outcome following surgical procedures is good physiotherapy treatment concentrating on:
Your physical therapist in the hospital is a part of a team of healthcare professionals whose goal is to ensure that you are moving around safely while in the hospital and when you leave the hospital.
Your physical therapist can help determine your functional mobility to help you have a safe discharge from the hospital and ensure that you receive the best care possible when you leave.
As soon as oxygen is restored to your brain after stroke, your body and brain begin a long process of recovering from brain damage and loss of muscle function. Post-stroke rehabilitation is a huge part of this recovery process, and it often begins as early as 24 hours after stroke. Stroke physical therapists are able to stimulate affected muscles and nerves to maintain circulation and prevent stiffness, then guide patients through the stages of stroke recovery as they relearn basic muscle movements. Physical therapists work as members of the cardiac rehabilitation team, helping to evaluate cardiac function, assess impairments that may limit your mobility, and prescribe progressive exercise and physical activity to help you return to your normal lifestyle after a cardiac event. While a heart attack is never a good thing, with professional guidance and the right attitude, you can turn it into something far better than you might think. A cardiac rehabilitation program is very important in achieving this end. By helping you make the changes in your life that you need to make, a good rehabilitation program can help you achieve a level of health that may even be better than it was before your heart attack.
Cardiorespiratory Physiotherapy is an area of physiotherapy that specialises in the prevention, rehabilitation, and compensation of clients with diseases and injuries in the heart and lungs. It is now widely recognised that appropriate exercise can be an effective disease prevention strategy and is integral to the management of those with a variety of cardiorespiratory conditions.
Depending on your condition, your RVC Physiotherapy treatment may include:
We are the local distributor for BIOFREEZE®. Applied topically, BIOFREEZE® provides relief from aches and pains of sore muscles and joints associated with backaches, arthritis, bruises, strains and sprains.
BIOFREEZE® helps break the pain cycle, by relieving pain through a method known as “Gate Control,” or “gating.” In the gating process, menthol acts to stimulate specific sensory receptors in the skin, thereby blocking other receptors from sending pain signals to the brain. Recommended use is up to 4 times per day – both before exercise or therapy (to relieve painful movement), and afterwards (to soothe muscle or joint soreness).
BIOFREEZE® is also known to be effective in helping people who have trouble sleeping due to nagging pain and discomfort. Users generally achieve a full night of undisturbed sleep when BIOFREEZE® is applied just prior to bedtime.
BIOFREEZE® is used by chiropractors, therapeutic massage practitioners, physical therapists and doctors in their clinics.
More often than not, your programme will address sitting and standing postures & strategies for addressing them, squatting and lifting techniques and any other movement pattern that is either aggravating your pain or is a requirement for your work/recreation needs. You will be made aware of how the strategies you have been using are connected to your pain and dysfunction and given simple cues/clues as to how to correct them before your pain intensifies.
By changing your posture and non-optimal movement behaviours, you can take back control over the events that are delaying your recovery.
To this end, we offer ergonomic evaluations with reports recommending the changes necessary to enhance your safety at the work place.

At RVC Rehab Services we marry our medical expertise with our exercise expertise into a fitness experience that is qualitatively different from and will far exceed any regular gym. As part of our development process we continually take principles and practices that we have found to be successful in delivering physical therapy services and apply them to fitness. For example, our vision dictated that we would provide only information and instruction that was scientifically based and successfully researched. We are proud of our team of physical therapists, exercise physiologists, physical therapist assistants and athletic trainers, among others.
After restoring joint mobility at our medically-oriented gym, an individual exercise programme is then prescribed. We will address the specific condition at hand, with emphasis on retaining motor patterns. Through this proven strategy, patients will get maximum results without irritation of joint structures or symptom exacerbation. All exercises are patient-specific according to their work and recreation demands.
Exercise programmes are offered on a one-to-one basis for specific conditions such as: backaches, postpartum health, weight loss, controlling diabetes or to simply improve overall wellness. Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates are some of the exercises included in such programmes. In addition, we teach exercise techniques for all of the body’s major joints, to combat some of the most common diagnoses seen in older persons such as: Stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Osteoporosis, gait and balance deficits, etc.
We have fulfilled our vision by providing a place where our referring physicians will feel confident in safely sending us overweight or obese patients, patients with diabetes, hypertension, cardiac problems, postpartum conditions and cancer, etc. Upon referral, we will design a programme that takes into account our patient’s medical status and progress them along as they improve. As these patients progress toward exercise independence, our therapy staff can now collaborate with the fitness staff and actually assist in making lifestyle changes for the patients!

“A SOUND approach to help you heal”
Extracorporeal Shock Wave Therapy Used At The World Cup is now available on island at RVC Physical Therapy Department at the Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital.
For years, ESWT has been used by veterinarians to assist with decreasing pain, alleviating injuries and even treating wounds. Today doctors and therapists are finding this technology to be beneficial for human musculoskeletal conditions such as:
The Miracle Wave ™ technology offers an effective, non-invasive SOUND approach to restoring painless mobility in patients with chronic and acute musculoskeletal conditions. Similar to the technology of Shock Wave Therapy (ESWT), The Miracle Wave ™ is a cutting-edge treatment solution, which utilizes sound waves (or acoustic pulses) to initiate a healing effect within the body to help repair, restore & rejuvenate muscle tissue; esepecially when conventional treatments were unsuccessful.
The best part? There are little to no side effects and there’s no downtime, which means patients are able to resume their daily activities as soon as possible.
Located in the Chrissie Tomlinson Memorial Hospital, RVC Rehab Services, the island’s first private physical therapy department, is proud to be the first in the Caribbean to carry this new machine. They were the first to have the older ESWT machine from 2005.
“We have gotten great results from the older ESWT machine over the past nine years and look forward to even great results from the new Miracle Wave”, said Jacqui Tomlinson- Smith, owner of RVC Rehab Services. ” We are happy to have our refresher training for our physical therapist staff to fall on World Physical Therapy Day, Monday, September 8 by Gerhard Kinas, the founder himself of this amazing machine.”
The Treatment
Following an examination, the average treatment session lasts about 10 minutes and 3- 7 treatment sessions may be required depending on the condition. This fast, safe, efficient and easy application allows patients to resume their daily activities as before.

abilitation settings. The two primary uses for this treatment are pain relief and muscle re-education. In most settings, there is a machine that provides an electrical current. Wires from the machine are connected to adhesive patches that are placed on the skin over a predetermined area. Electrical current is then sent from the machine to the patches and delivered into the muscle tissue below, causing a sensory or motor response.

The frustration of fibromyalgia sufferers is well founded, as it’s a condition of often unknown origin with no standard treatment and no cure. It’s believed by researchers that fibromyalgia may cause the brain to change the way it processes pain, in effect amplifying messages of pain sensation. The sufferer starts to feel pain more severely than accounted for by any body condition. Our team of specialists at RVC Physiotherapy & Chiropractic Services frequently treat the symptoms that accompany fibromyalgia.
Dizziness can be described as an assortment of symptoms from feeling woozy after a ride or light-headed with standing up quickly, to a sensation of being unstable or feeling faint. Some people, however, suffer with a more severe and specific type of dizziness called vertigo, a medical term describing a symptom of perceiving (falsely) the movement (whirling, spinning, or rotating) of the environment. The cause of this debilitating condition is sometimes difficult to delineate. Fortunately, in majority of cases a specific cause can be identified allowing for proper management. Proper diagnosis and management of vestibular dysfunctions requires an interdisciplinary approach. Our team at RVC Physiotherapy & Chiropractic Services are specialists in vestibular rehabilitation and are experienced in effective management of symptoms related to various vestibular disorders.
